Interview
What is your name (or pen name) and where do you live now?
My name is Kate Deveaux and I live in Arizona.
First off, how has your week been?
It’s been a fabulous week with my much awaited release day for SAIL AWAY WITH ME. The wait for this book release was longer than having a baby!
What was the hardest part of writing your book?
One of the funny things about writing SAIL AWAY WITH ME is keeping track of where Jody and Taggart and her friends were on board ship. I had to resort to a cruise ship brochure map that I used for a Pearl of the Sea mock up so I knew what deck Jody was on, where the dining room was, the Twilight Bar, the Odyssey Bar, her stateroom, Taggart’s stateroom, the Spa and the Lido Deck pool were, etc. Not to mention which way Jody was facing, which direction she was walking (to the bow or the stern) etc. It was challenging but fun too!
Are there certain characters you would like to go back to, or is there a theme or idea you’d love to work with?
Oh, I have so many plans for Taggart and Jody and her friends. I’d love to pursue Jody and Taggart’s relationship and sexual evolution once married, plus I’m itching to work on the vineyard that Taggart and Trace get involved in! As for Lauren, she has her own book in her for sure and I have a few things in mind for Doreen too.
Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
I think one of the strong messages is to believe in yourself. And to let go and see how life unfolds. For Jody, she was a defeated, disillusioned — hanging on to the things she held most dear post divorce — her son and her father, her career and her best friends. When she meets Taggart, he is so carefree and so self assured it scares her. Rocks her boat so to speak. I guess sometimes falling overboard can be a good thing!
How long does it usually take you to write a book, from the original idea to finishing writing it?
Depends on the book. Usually 6 months to a year or so is a good benchmark for a longer single title with strong secondary characters. A shorter novella I can write more quickly, but the editing and ideas for re writes I get each time make in a longer process in either case.
Do you have plans for a new book?
Of course! I have scads of ideas and just not enough time in the day! Hot as Hades is my newest endeavor, set in the smoldering Arizona desert in the middle of summer. It’s about a heart stopping bad boy who turns out to be the next door neighbor to an uptight career woman in desperate need of some really good “bad” in her life.
What genre would you place your books into?
Erotic contemporary romance.
What made you decide to write that genre of book?
I love a good love story with great characters, but I hate it when the bedroom door is shut on the reader. I like to read and write about every aspect of a love story as it evolves, and that means that bedroom door is wide open!
Do you choose a title first, or write the book then choose the title?
You know, I do both, but lately I like to choose the title first. In fact, I keep a list of titles and brief one-line plot summaries that I add to whenever I get a new idea. It’s fun to look through the list and choose one that inspires me when I’m ready to tackle a new project.
Thanks so much for having me, this was fun!
Best,
Kate

THESE TWO REALLY KNOW HOW TO ROCK THE BOAT…
“Sizzling shipboard romance —Jody throws caution to the wind as she lets go of her inhibitions and indulges in one magnificent week of pleasure. Passions surge, lovers tangle and two lives will never be the same again.”
Before Jody Carter and her three best friends ever set foot aboard the luxury cruise ship, Jody falls into the arms of uber hunky celebrity guest Taggart Keith, when he saves her shoe from falling to the depths of the sea. Their attraction is undeniable, but the recently divorced single mom knows the last thing she needs is to complicate her life in just seven short days. But that’s exactly what happens when Jody throws caution to the wind for once in her life and gives into a week of sensational pleasures. Taggart helps her discover her more sensual side — one tantalizing night at a time.

“Hey there, Jody,” he called out.
“Oh, hi….Taggart,” she said with surprise, pretending she hadn’t seen him.
“We really have to stop meeting like this.” He smiled and walked towards her down the narrow hall dotted with luggage.
She laughed nervously at the cliché that was proving all too true if she was to keep her sanity. “I guess so. Well, this is my room.” She fidgeted with her keycard as he came up beside her.
“Mine’s just down the hall.” Taggart pointed behind him, but he just stood there, his tall frame close to her. She looked up at him, overly aware of the scent of sandalwood, one of her favorites. Very masculine.
“Mmm…coincidence,” she said, the hallway becoming smaller by the minute when he flashed that boyish smile, with one corner of his mouth raised. Cocky, but undeniably sexy at the same time.
Unable to break the gaze, she tried to insert the keycard into the lock, not paying attention to what she was doing. The card grazed the slot and she forced her eyes away from his.
“I guess you didn’t find your friends after all?” he inquired, leaning casually against the wall, as she slid the keycard all the way in the lock.
Caught red handed at her own lie, she smiled down at her shoes. “No, I didn’t.”
“So you can have that drink with me after all,” he stated flatly, placing his hand over hers as she held the key in the lock.
Her heart pounded in her chest. She couldn’t move a muscle. “I don’t think that’s a good idea,” she said.
He frowned but left his hand on hers. “Because?”
Because? Her mind raced. She couldn’t tell him it was because she was afraid. Afraid how her body trembled when he was near, how her cheeks burned and her sex thrummed.
“I’ll wait,” he said with a devilish grin eyeing the keycard still in the lock.
“I really don’t think it’s a good idea, is all.”
“You already said that,” he said straight faced, but she could see the playful look in his eyes. As he removed his hand, he continued to lean easily on the doorframe, his face close to hers as if he had all the time in the world to wait for her to be ready. He was close enough she could see the barely visible laugh lines when he smiled and the slight five o clock shadow on his chiseled jaw.
“Look Taggart,” she said, just saying his name made her heart beat faster. “I’m not ready for…” her heart beat rapidly thinking about just what she wasn’t ready for… to be intimate with a man.
“Ready for what?” he teased. A flush of desire rushed through her. He was playing with her, flirting with her.
